U.S Restricts Export of Spent Lead-Acid Batteries

3/19/2010

Policy goes into effect starting July 7, 2010.

Exports of spent lead-acid batteries (SLABs) from the United States for recovery will be prohibited on or after July 7, 2010, unless the exporter has submitted a notification and obtained consent from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the receiving country, according to a news release from the EPA.

SLAB exporters are encouraged to submit notifications to EPA at least six to eight weeks before July 7, 2010 to avoid potential delays to SLAB export shipments.

Technical guidance on the export process and how to prepare and submit an export notification is available at http://www.epa.gov/epawaste/hazard/international/oecd-res.htm.
