Recycling Service for Servers on the Way

Obsolete server recycling system will be launched at Storage Visions Conference in January in Las Vegas.


KOM Networks, a provider of storage management and archiving systems and software based in Ottawa, Canada, is partnering with the 2010 Storage Visions Conference to spread the word about a storage hardware recycling program designed to benefit the Feed The Children charity.

The “Junk-A-Juke” program has been designed to keep end-of-life computer storage systems out of landfills and to recycle the constituent materials. According to a news release, KOM and its recycling partner, the Technology Conservation Group (TCG), Lecanto, Fla., will pick up and track each piece of equipment through destruction to ensure that recycling takes place. Money earned from the sale of raw materials generated from the obsolete storage equipment traded in will be donated to Feed the Children, says KOM Networks.

The recycling service can also be accompanied by a free-of-charge upgrade of the Dell-powered KOMpliance Archive and the purchase of a three year maintenance agreement, says KOM Networks.

Details of the program will be made available to attendees of the Ninth Annual Storage Visions Conference, to be held at the Riviera Hotel Convention Center in Las Vegas, Jan. 5 and 6, 2010 (www.storagevisions.com).

“With older storage systems being difficult to dispose of, KOM is taking a problem area and using it to do something truly philanthropic—they are making lemonade,” says Tom Coughlin, President of Coughlin Associates, organizers of the Storage Visions event. “Storage Visions is the ideal forum to target the storage industry decision makers. We are more than happy to serve lemonade for such a worthwhile cause.”

KOM says its intention for the program is to responsibly discard obsolete hardware and help provide food for as many as 1 million children in North America who are at risk of going hungry.
