Schupan opens retail buying center in Indiana

Recycling company also names new chief operating officer.

Schupan Industrial Recycling Services, a division of Kalamazoo, Michigan-based Schupan & Sons Inc., has announced the opening of its newest retail buying center in Elkhart, Indiana. The new retail center is adjacent to Schupan’s current Elkhart operations.

“I have seen hundreds of scrap facilities throughout the country during my 20-plus years in the recycling industry [and] this facility is one of, if not the most, customer-friendly facilities in the country,” says Gary Curtis, president of operations for Schupan Industrial Recycling Services.

The new Elkhart retail facility, says Curtis, was designed with customers' convenience, comfort and safety as its focus.

“The facility accommodates large contractors who trade with hundreds of pounds of recyclable materials as well as a parent with their children recycling a bag of aluminum cans. All of this will be accomplished indoors and within a quick frame of time,” Curtis says, adding that the 19,000-square-foot facility is designed to service customers in a clean, indoor facility.

Schupan also has announced it has named Tom Emmerich, the current president of

Emmerich
Schupan Recycling, as its new chief operating officer (COO). All of the company’s divisional presidents will report to Emmerich.

“As a member of the Schupan team for the last 23 years, I have grown to truly respect and appreciate this company for all it has to offer,” Emmerich says. “I consider myself fortunate and humbled by the opportunity to work closer with Marc Schupan (company CEO) and all of the divisions as we embark on an exciting and challenging future.”

Emmerich adds, “I have much to learn, but I know that Schupan & Sons’ core values of honesty, integrity and doing what we say will serve me throughout the process.”

Emmerich started with Schupan Recycling in 1992 as operations manager at the company’s Wixom, Michigan, location. In 1998 Emmerich was promoted to president of Schupan Recycling. Prior to working with Schupan Emmerich worked with Alcoa for five years as the company’s marketing manager for Michigan.

Schupan CEO Marc Schupan says, “It is a privilege to announce the promotion of Tom Emmerich to COO, a new position to which our divisional presidents will report. Tom will use his strong organizational and communication skills and his vision to enhance Schupan & Sons’ growth strategy for the future.”

Schupan & Sons, a third generation, family-owned metals and plastics business specializing in industrial and electronics recycling, fabrication and distribution, and beverage container processing, has 12 facilities located in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.
