Since its inception in 2008, Recycling Today Global Edition has prepared content for the global recycling market by communicating via telephone, email and in-person conversations with people around the world on an ongoing basis.

The Recycling Today Media Group not only sends its editors and account managers to trade shows and industry events throughout the world, it also serves as the host or co-host of recycling conferences in Europe, the Middle East and East Asia.

Enhancing this commitment to fully research and understand global recycling markets, starting in late October, I’ll be reporting, researching and writing from Hong Kong—a place that is some 8,000 miles away from my lifelong home in the Great Lakes region of the United States.

Many readers of this publication are familiar with Hong Kong as a gateway for scrap materials entering into South China. More than 2 million shipping containers move through the port of Hong Kong each month, and scrap materials are present in a fair share of those.

Working from Hong Kong, it will be my privilege to report on some of the destinations in South China and beyond to which those shipments of scrap materials are headed.

Hong Kong also will serve as a base to report on circumstances shaping the demand for scrap in East Asia and South Asia as well as the growing generation and processing of scrap in those regions.

No matter how slowly or quickly nations such as China or India decrease their dependence on imported scrap, the trends and market developments in the world’s most highly populated region will certainly be of consequence.

As I’m striving to report all I can about these important scrap trading partners, it also means there is a long list of tasks and obligations that I won’t be taking with me to Hong Kong. With a lot of gratitude and with no reservations, I know these tasks will be in the good hands of my five colleagues on the editorial staff of the Recycling Today Media Group.

Many of you already know Senior Editor Dan Sandoval and Recycling Today Media Group Managing Editor DeAnne Toto, each of whom has significant tenure. DeAnne and Dan, along with Recycling Today Global Edition Managing Editor Lisa McKenna, Kristin Smith, and Kelley Stoklosa, will continue the work it takes to produce the magazines, e-newsletters and conferences we create for the recycling industry.

Thanks to the hard work of my colleagues and the leadership of Group Publisher Jim Keefe, I can look forward to helping make Recycling Today Global Edition even more global than it has been.
