Recycling rate increases in Albuquerque, New Mexico

According to an article in the Albuquerque (New Mexico) Journal, city residents have diverted in excess of 70 percent more material for recycling since the city has retooled its recycling program.

The program uses wheeled blue recycling carts that are collected weekly. 

According to the article, "A profit-sharing agreement with Friedman Recycling, the company that handles the material after the city picks it up, penalizes the city if the recycling tonnage doesn’t meet a minimum monthly threshold.

"The city has made about $332,000 in revenue sharing so far and paid about $189,000 in penalties."
