Recupyl, based in France, has taken its first step into the North American market with the establishment of Recupyl Battery Solutions. The newly formed company is a joint venture between Recupyl and Battery Solutions Inc., a Michigan battery recycling firm. The new company is focused on recycling batteries in the United States.

The joint venture is establishing two mechanical lines for both alkaline and lithium-ion batteries that will have a total capacity of 5 million lbs/year, and the facility will operate from Brighton, Mich. The center is schedule to open by the second quarter of this year.

Recupyl, which initially specialized in portable batteries, will expand its business operations with the JV by adding batteries for electric vehicles to its list of materials handled. Further, the facility will include processing scraps.

This development is made possible by the company's new technologies in recycling advanced electrode materials such as those found in hybrid and electric vehicle batteries which will lead in a significant increase in demand.

According to a release, due to flexibility, low capital investment and high returns, Recupyl’s technology offers the possibility to locate recycling facilities close to the waste streams - in this case centered in Michigan.

The company is looking to deploy facilities around the world instead of sending all the used batteries to a single centralized facility. Several plants have already been created in Poland, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom, and France and in other countries where the global Recupyl network is dominant.
