Pennsylvania DEP Issues Residual Waste Processing Permit Facility

3/10/2010

The Pennsylvania Department of Environment Protection has issued a residual waste processing permit to Advanced Waste Services Inc. to treat a variety of industrial wastes, including wastewater from oil and gas well developments in the New Castle, Pa., area.

Advanced Waste Services (AWS) historically had restricted its activities to processing and treating liquid waste and sludge containing oil residues. The company also accepted and treated wastewater from the oil and gas industry.

In recent years, though, Advanced Waste Services decided to expand its business and seek more flexibility in the types and quantities of waste it treats. As a result, the company applied for a residual waste processing permit on April 23, 2007.

In a release, the DEP noted that it suspended its review of AWS's application when a major fire destroyed the company’s facility after it submitted the application. Once the company revised the facility’s design, the department resumed its review.

Following past practice, Advanced Waste Services will continue to discharge its processed wastewaters to the New Castle, Pa., Sanitation Authority sewage treatment plan after the wastewater undergoes pre-treatment on site.
