Surviving and thriving during these turbulent times will be addressed in sessions throughout this year’s Paper Recycling Conference Europe.
A combination of low generation of recovered fibre and declining prices being offered by mills are putting the squeeze on European paper recyclers. Several European recyclers say they see the downward trend continuing for the next several quarters as many European countries struggle with challenging economies.
One recycler says both printer grades and brown grades have seen prices drop from 25 to 50 percent over the past six months. Another source says brown grades have fallen from the $140-per-metric-ton level to the mid-$80s level.
The high grade sector in Europe is seeing many of the same dynamics that are taking place in the United States, with printing plants closing down, further reducing the supply of higher grades of recovered fiber. “Printers continue to go bust,” one scrap paper dealer says.
In an industry that is facing challenges, it is now more important than ever to keep abreast of market conditions and to work with business partners and peers to assess and address issues which may change the future landscape of paper recycling. Surviving and thriving during these turbulent times will be addressed in sessions throughout this year’s Paper Recycling Conference Europe. Presentations include:
- Market Overview – The 2012 opening session offers an economic overview with a focus on Europe as well as global factors that are influencing conditions in the paper and board industry.
- The Search for Supply – Panelists will discuss how some traditional sources of recovered fibre are dwindling and how others may provide new opportunities.
- New Capacity, New Opportunities? – New mills in Europe provide new opportunities for the recovered fibre sector, but to what extent will this new capacity squeeze out existing mills, and where do other market opportunities lie?
- A World of Questions – Updates from China, India and the Middle East and what this means to your business.
The conference will convene 6 – 7 November, 2012, at the Park Plaza Victoria London, London, U.K. More information is available at the conference website, www.PaperRecyclingEurope.com.
