Horticultural Plastics Recycler Now Running at Full Capacity

3/5/2010

Michigan facility is designed to handle 10 million pounds of material a year.

East Jordan Plastics, a manufacturer of horticultural plastic products, has announced that its recycling facility is now running 24 hours a day. The facility, located in South Haven, Mich., targets the recycling of plastic horticultural containers. In total, the facility is designed to recycle more than 10 million pounds of the containers a year.

The 130,000-square-foot facility is located near East Jordan’s two production plant, located in Beaverton, Mich. and East Jordan, Mich.

“We exceeded expectations in 2009, the first year our facility was open. Presently, we are operating at full capacity and making plans to purchase additional equipment to increase that capacity. We will continue to accept horticultural scrap and are always looking for additional sources of supply,” says Cal Diller, president of East Jordan Plastics.

The goal of the recycling plant is to establish a closed loop recycling facility for horticultural containers. To accomplish this, the company introduced a pilot program last year with several large garden centers in the Midwest. Through the program shipping carts were placed in garden centers. Containers that could not be reused were sent to East Jordan’s South Haven facility to be recycled.

“The best way to achieve sustainability is to recycle and reuse what we create. Our new facility is the key to our efforts in making as many containers as possible from material reclaimed from the marketplace. With the gardening public’s cooperation, it can be a template for future recycling facilities around the country,” says Nathan Diller, East Jordan’s recycling manager.
