The Brussels-based World Steel Association (Worldsteel) says it has recognized nine companies as Steel Sustainability Champions for their efforts toward sustainability in 2020.
The 2020 Steel Sustainability Champions are: JFE Steel Corp., Japan; JSW Steel Ltd., India; Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK Group), Russia; Outokumpu Oyj, Finland; Severstal (PAO), Russia; Tata Steel Europe; Tata Steel Ltd., India; Tenaris SA, Luxembourg; and Ternium SA, Luxembourg.
According to Worldsteel, JFE Steel Corp., NLMK Group, Outokumpu Oyj and Severstal are being recognized as champions for the first time. The other firms are being recognized for the third or fourth year.
Criteria to attain the status involves providing data for six of the Worldsteel Sustainability Indicators (material efficiency, environmental management systems, lost time injury frequency rate, employee training, investment in new processes and products, economic value distributed). Nominees also must provide life cycle inventory (LCI) data to that covers more than 50 percent of the company’s crude steel production data and is less than 5 years old.
