Will County, Illinois, considers adding electronics recycling locations

New Lenox and Peotone are interested in hosting additional drop-off events.

According to an article in the Herald News, Joliet, Illinois, the board of Will County, Illinois, is considering implementing two electronic recycling drop-off locations as part of intergovernmental agreements with the Illinois village of Peotone and New Lenox Township.

Currently, Will County’s only active electronics recycling drop-off is the Lockport Public Works Department, which accepts electronics from 6 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays. Marta Keane, recycling specialist for the Will County Resource Recovery and Energy Division, told the paper that the success of this facility is partially responsible for the proposal to create similar locations.

“We’re hearing other communities like this idea,” Keane said. “We might come forward with more intergovernmental agreements and try to grow this model.”

The exploration of new facilities is a result of the county’s previous recycling vendor, Vintage Tech Recyclers, Plainfield, Illinois, unexpectedly terminating its contract March 1, 2016. This necessitated the closure of the county’s original 13 drop-off locations.

According to Keane, several small, monthly drop-off events could provide more consistency for residents and complement the Lockport location. The proposed Peotone drop-off events would be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at the village police department, while the New Lenox Township events would be held at the same time onthe second and fourth Wednesdays of each month.
