Waste Industries Unveils CNG Station and Refuse Fleet

More than 80,000 North Carolinians will be served by compressed natural gas vehicles.

The solid waste management firm Waste Industries USA Inc. (WI), headquartered in Raleigh, N.C., has launched the first compressed natural gas (CNG) station and fleet in the Cape Fear region of North Carolina. The company had launched a CNG station and fleet in Durham, N.C., in May of 2012.

The launch of WI’s newest CNG station and fleet was held at the company’s Bolivia Branch in Brunswick County, N.C., which is the home to 46 CNG filling points. The company says that 32 trucks and one service vehicle will operate using CNG and will service about 80,500 homes and businesses throughout the region. The station is not open to the public at this time.

“Since 1970, Waste Industries has been a leading innovator in the solid waste services industry,” says Ven Poole, CEO of Waste Industries. “As part of our annual review, we concluded that CNG has become a viable long-term, low-cost alternative to diesel fuel. We are committed to converting our fleets to CNG whenever possible and are proud of our employees’ and business partners’ efforts to make this happen. We will continue protecting our environment and improving the quality of life in the communities we serve.”

The WI project is the result of a partnership of services provided by Mansfield Energy Corp. (MEC), Gainesville, Ga.; and Piedmont Natural Gas (PNG), Dallas. Mansfield provided the construction design, engineering and project management services for installing the fueling station. PNG will provide WI with natural gas service as well as the related infrastructure necessary to operate the CNG fleet.

“Piedmont Natural Gas is pleased to provide environmentally clean, safe, and efficient natural gas for Waste Industries’ new compressed natural gas filling station. Further development of such CNG infrastructures – both public and private – is a vital component in fulfilling the promise that abundant, American natural gas holds for the transportation sector and for our economy in general,” says Ken Valentine, PNG’s vice president of business development and gas technology services.

“Waste Industries continues to provide real and tangible leadership in our country’s transition to a clean burning domestic fuel,” says J. Alexander, president, Mansfield Energy Corp. “We are proud to partner on the building of their CNG stations and maintaining those systems to provide reliable, affordable fuel for their fleet and lessen our dependency on foreign crude oil.”
“Innovation and sustainability are more than just marketing jargon to our company. They are part of our 43-year heritage and ingrained in our corporate culture,” concludes Poole.
