Tomra Sorting to Exhibit at K 2013 Show

The event, held from Oct. 16-23 in Dusseldorf, Germany, is a trade fair for the plastics and rubber industries.

Sensor-based sorting systems pioneer Tomra Sorting will demonstrate its virgin and recycled plastics, as well as rubber sorting applications, at the upcoming K 2013 in Düsseldorf, Germany. The company will showcase its new generation BEST Genius and Titech autosort (flake) systems at the trade fair.

Tomra says its new generation Genius optical sorter combines mechanics, optics and computing in a high performance, robust machine, which sorts valuable materials at high capacity (up to 10 tons per hour) and resolution (100 microns). The product is fed through a hopper system onto a high speed transport belt, where it is scanned consecutively by color cameras and lasers on-belt, plus top and bottom monochrome high resolution cameras off-belt. 

Pieter Willems, Tomra Sorting’s market unit manager for raw materials, says, “The Genius optical sorter’s powerful combination of detection methods allows the selection of multiple potential sorting parameters. Defects identified by the system are removed with high accuracy through electronically controlled air blasts from a row of narrow, individually controlled valves, guaranteeing perfect defect removal and minimal good product loss.”

Christoph Bach, Tomra Sorting’s sales director for recycling in central Europe, says: “The plastics industry increasingly realizes that recycling of plastics is not only good for saving primary resources, but also cost efficient. Accurate, automated sorting of different plastics, including food grade recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate), is essential to achieve the industry’s high quality standards.

The TITECH autosort (flake) precisely analyzes and sorts flakes by material detection, the company says. The sophisticated sensor technology also allows the simultaneous detection of selected colors. Tomra says combining a field-proven mechanical setup with advanced double sensor systems, the system improves plastic flake sorting efficiency significantly. A visible range spectrometer detects selected color contaminants while a near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer simultaneously identifies materials such as PET, HDPE (high-density polyethylene), PP (polypropylene), PVC (polyvinyl chloride), PS (polystyrene) and PL A (polylactic acid). These features, combined with an especially narrow valve grid and a short distance between the measuring process and ejection, guarantee precise sorting, according to the company.

Tomra Sorting will also present its in-line synthetic rubber crumb and plastics pellets sorting solutions at the trade fair. Synthetic rubber defects identified by the system—such as gels, wet spots and discolorations—can be removed with accuracy, guaranteeing perfect defect removal and minimal good product loss, the company says. Tomra Sorting’s powerful combination of detection methods—including laser scanners, cameras and spectroscopy—allows users to select multiple potential sorting parameters.
