Speakers Confirmed for Paper & Plastics Recycling Conference Middle East

Supply and demand trends and future of key paper grades among topics at Dubai conference in February.

Several industry experts have been lined up as speakers for the inaugural Paper & Plastics Recycling Conference Middle East. The event will be held Feb. 27-28, 2012, at the JW Marriott hotel in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The conference is being hosted by U.S.-based Recycling Today Media Group and Dubai-based Media Fusion, the publisher of Waste & Recycling Middle East magazine.

In the opening keynote, at 8:30 a.m., Feb. 27, the office of the Waste Management Director of Dubai will provide a comprehensive look at the recycling programs developed to serve the community.

From 10 to 11:30 a.m. Brian Taylor, editorial director, Recycling Today Media Group, will moderate “Paper Recycling in the Middle East.” The session will focus on the current status of secondary fiber markets in the Middle East region with an emphasis on the regional consumption of recovered fiber. The featured speakers are Mohammed Al-Mowkley, general manager of OPI (Obeikan Paper Industries) and Atul Kaul of Waraq Paper.

The afternoon sessions begin at 1:30 with a session titled “Plastics Recycling in the Middle East,” moderated by Asfia Kahan, editor, Waste & Recycling Middle East. This session will provide an overview of the plastic scrap market in the Middle East and how it is anticipated to develop.

At 2:50 p.m., a session titled “Recycling Equipment and Technology” will begin. Moderated by James R. Keefe, group publisher, Recycling Today Media Group, this session will explore how technology and equipment providers are helping recyclers sort and process their materials. Steve Miller, Bulk Handling Systems (BHS), Jonathan Clarke, country manager U.K., TITECH Visionsort Ltd. and Ake Anderzen, KALMEC will present during this session.

The final session of day one is titled “Global Recovered Paper Supply and Demand Trends.” In this session, moderated by Peter Engel of Moore & Associates, delegates will learn how developments around the world are affecting recyclers in the Middle East region. Niels van Binsbergen, managing director, ACN Europe, has been confirmed as a speaker for this session.

Feb. 28, the opening keynote will consist of a special presentation from the Centre of Waste Management, Abu Dhabi, examining the development of recycling policies and practices in that municipality. Keefe will serve as moderator.

At 10 a.m., a session will provide case studies demonstrating how specific recycling plants in the Middle East operate to best serve the region.

After lunch, a session titled “The Future of Key Paper Grades” will take place at 1 p.m. Moderated by Keefe, this session will feature prominent merchants and traders from around the world offering their views on how the paper recycling industry is taking shape in 2012, including Ranjit Baxi, CEO, J&H Sales International Ltd., and Helmut Berger, general manager, Abu Dhabi National Paper Mills.

At 2:50 p.m., a session titled “Global Recovered Plastics Supply and Demand Trends” will feature a panel of large-volume plastics recyclers who will offer their insights on the state of the global plastics recycling industry. Taylor will moderate this session which will include Surenda Borad, CEO, Gemini Corp. and a representative from ACN Europe.

At 4:20 p.m., the final session, titled “Residential Collection,” will be moderated by Taylor. Delegates will learn how household recyclables (including recovered fiber and plastic scrap) are being collected in the Middle East. Engel will moderate the session and Fredereic Vigier, CEO, Trashco is a confirmed speaker for the session.
