ReCommunity, a national recycling company based in Charlotte, N.C., has converted its dual-stream materials recovery facility (MRF) in Memphis, Tenn., to a single-stream system. The company chose the CP Group, San Diego, to design, manufacture and install new equipment at the 42,000-square-foot building, which restarted in January 2013.

The new system is designed to process glass, aluminum, steel, plastic, old newspapers, old magazines and old corrugated containers (OCC). CP Group says the single-stream upgrade of ReCommunity’s Memphis plant adds highly automated and technologically advanced machinery, resulting in less manual sorting and higher quality end-products.
“The challenge of designing this system was to incorporate the maximum amount of existing machinery, while retrofitting the system to incorporate all of the new machinery in the same building footprint,” says Hans Ouellet, CP Group’s vice president of sales and marketing. “We rose to the challenge, and what we have today in Memphis is a real state-of-the-art recycling single-stream facility that is driving results.”
The system includes a CP OCC Screen for pulling out cardboard; a CP NEWScreen and CPScreen for separating fibers form containers; two MSS Aladdin optical sorters for separating and recovering PET, cartons and mixed plastics Nos. 3 through 7; and an Impact Air Airknife and Zig Zag Glass Cleaner.
