Midwest Fiber Recycling, based in Normal, Illinois, has announced that its electronics recycling division has been independently audited and certified to the R2:2013, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007 standards for responsible management systems and procedures.
The company, which serves customers throughout central Illinois, says the three certifications focus on services involving information destruction, disassembly, sorting and recycling of electronic equipment.
“We are excited to expand Midwest Fiber Recycling’s wide range of service offerings and expertise to include electronics recycling, allowing for advanced service options from a trusted recycler,” says Marie Streenz, business development manager of the company’s electronics division.
The Responsible Recycling Practices (R2) R2:2013 Standard was developed by the R2 Solutions Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) as the next generation of the R2 Standard, which was first released in 2008 by the U.S. EPA.
R2 Solutions, Boulder, Colorado, a nonprofit organization, is the governing body that administers the R2 certification program. R2 Solutions services supports and educates companies on the opportunities associated with the certification.
R2 certification is designed to certify that electronics recycling and refurbishing facilities conform to the R2 Standard, which is based on best practices in environmental health and worker safety, data security and applicable laws.
R2:2013, the updated version of the standard, emphasizes repair and reuse, record keeping and reporting, environmental health and safety planning, data security and other updates.
ISO 14001:2004 is an environmental management standard that helps organizations minimize their processes that potentially could have a negative impact on the environment while complying with applicable laws, regulations and environmental requirements.
OHSAS 18001:2007 is an externally assessed occupational health and safety management system that ensures that safety management practices are in accordance with international standards.
Midwest Fiber Recycling operates four facilities in the Illinois cities of Bloomington-Normal, Decatur, Springfield and Peoria. In addition to processing more than 260 million pounds of recyclables per year, the company operates a confidential document destruction division and a food composting company.
