An article in The Post and Courier, Charleston, South Carolina, reports that recycling centers in Berkeley County, South Carolina, will accept only paper and cardboard starting Sept. 1, 2016. All other recyclables will be sent to the landfill.
The council’s Human Resources and Purchasing Committee voted Monday, July 11, 2016, to accept an amendment that extends its processing contract with Sonoco for one year, the paper reports. The issue will be discussed by the full council at its July 25 meeting. If the council does not agree to the amendment, the contract will end Aug. 31, and there will be no recycling at Berkeley’s 22 drop-off locations. The change does not affect residents who contract for curbside pickup with private companies, according to the article.
The article adds that the county will construct a recycling facility near the landfill, following a deal reached in November with Spartanburg-based RePower South. A timetable for the facility’s completion has not yet been finalized.
“While Repower South continues to work through the permitting process, they also continue to reaffirm their commitment to Berkeley County to provide single-stream recycling for the residents,” county spokesman Michael Mule told the newspaper.
