Back Thru The Future, an electronics recycling company based in Franklin, N.J., says it has been permitted to offer mobile shredding of hard drives, cell phones and PDAs by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. This makes Back Thru The Future the first company in the state permitted to offer mobile destruction of these devices, according to the company.
“There are only 10 Class D licenses, including ours, within the state, and they are issued for a specific physical location,” says Dan Bayha, vice president of Back Thru The Future. “Mobile hard drive shredding has been prohibited within the state because shredding is considered processing and is not performed at a single permanent location.”
Having the first and, at this point, the only mobile hard drive shredding license in the state of New Jersey represents a valuable business franchise, Back Thru The Future says. The company says it plans to reach out to the mobile document destruction industry and to asset recovery companies to provide on-site hard drive shredding within New Jersey.
“It’s important for out-of-state shredders to know that it is their New Jersey-based clients that will be fined if unlicensed hard drive shredding occurs in New Jersey,” Melanie Haga, president and CEO of Back Thru The Future, says. “We will be offering discounted rates that should allow our partners to make excellent profits on these opportunities while protecting their clients.”
Bayha says, “The entire licensing process in New Jersey is a major investment in time and money. Once you obtain your license, you have an annual cost in excess of $20,000 in license and inspection fees to maintain it. The fact that hard drive shredding required the license represented a significant business advantage to us in our plant-based secure destruction business within New Jersey. Obtaining the modification to our license to permit mobile hard drive shredding was an obvious next step for us.”
