Recycling Today Staff August 19, 2014
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is inviting residents of the state to submit comments in regard to the proposed renewal of a permit for McKenzie Recycling Inc., which operates a material recovery facility (MRF) in Eugene, Oregon. The facility has been permitted by the Oregon DEQ since 2004; its existing permit expires Nov. 17, 2014.

Under the renewed permit, McKenzie would be able to continue to operate the MRF with the requirements, limitations and conditions set forth in the original permit.

The facility is designed to recover dry waste materials for recycling and reuse. Any loads handled by the facility would contain a high percentage of materials generated at commercial, industrial, construction and demolition sites and from the public. Typical recyclable, reusable, compostable or other recoverable materials that are accepted by the facility include old corrugated containers (OCC), kraft and mixed paper, ferrous and nonferrous metals, yard debris, wood waste, plastics and sorted construction and demolition debris consisting primarily of recoverable materials (brick, concrete, rock).

McKenzie Recycling also is authorized to receive source-separated recyclables at the facility for consolidation and transfer to end markets.

The DEQ notes that it has not issued any enforcement actions for the site during the 10 years the facility has been in operations.

Comments can be submitted either by mail, fax or email to Denise Miller, Permit Coordinator Western Region Oregon DEQ Solid Waste Program 165 E. 7th Ave., Eugene, Oreogon, 97401. The DEQ also can be contacted by telephone at 503-686 -7465 or 800-884-8467, by fax at 541-686-7551 and by emai at miller.denise@deq.state.or.us.

More details on the permit can be viewed at www.oregon.gov/deq/docs/091814McKenzieRecyc.pdf.
