Waste & Recycling Middle East announces MEWAR Awards winners

Inaugural award ceremony recognizes innovation, environmental initiatives and best practices in Middle East.

Al Qaryan Group, Saudi Arabia, Ras Al Khaimah Waste Management Agency and Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority are among the winners of the inaugural Middle East Waste & Recycling (MEWAR) Awards. Winners were announced at a gala dinner and ceremony Oct. 25 at the Address Dubai Marina in the United Arab Emirates.

The MEWAR Awards honored the top performers across 14 categories with 31 awards. More than 130 nominations were submitted from Middle Eastern countries across various sectors, including waste management, recycling, healthcare and hospitality.

This year, Waste & Recycling Middle East, a publication that focuses on environmental management issues in the Middle East, launched the region's first awards program to celebrate best practices in the environmental management business. The publication says the event recognized individuals and organizations in the Middle East that are demonstrating leadership and innovation and moving toward environmental sustainability with various initiatives that support the region’s vision of a green, circular economy.

"Hosting the Middle East Waste & Recycling Awards is an honor," says Media Fusion Sales and Marketing Manager Taher Patrawala. "The awards have been designed to raise the standards in the sector and provide a benchmark for performance and industry recognition. We have put in great efforts into the first ever awards for the region’s waste recycling industry and the inaugural edition drew participation from organisations across the Middle East.”

Waste management company Bee’ah won the Waste Management Company of the Year award as well as the award for Best Public Awareness Campaign, while Dulsco’s Chief Innovation Officer S. Madhumohan won the Personality of the Year award in the waste management category.

Lauded for its initiatives in source segregation and public awareness programs, Ras Al Khaimah Waste Management Agency was awarded Best Municipal Waste Diversion Program.

In addition, Al Qaryan Group was named Metals Recycling Company of the Year and Middle East Paper Company (MEPCO) won the Paper Recycling Company of the Year award.

The entries were evaluated by a grand jury panel of international industry professionals.

The Environmental Initiative of the Year award was designed to recognize companies for their efforts to promote and follow sustainable business practices. Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority (DSO) won the award for its community farm initiative, which was highly favored by the judges.

A tie for the Personality of the Year award in the recycling division led to the award being shared by Salam Sharif, chairman of Sharif Metals, and Ehsan Haji Amin, chairman of Ala International.
