ISRI announces Circle of Safety Excellence Occupational Awards

SA Recycling's Savannah, Georgia, yard; Alter Trading Corp.'s Davenport, Iowa, yard; and Pratt Recycling Inc.'s Staten Island, New York-based operation are among the winners of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries’ (ISRI) Circle of Safety Excellence (COSE) Occupational Awards. The new safety awards, which were presented during ISRI2019, ISRI’s annual Convention and Exposition April 8-11 in Los Angeles, recognized member companies for outstanding commitment to safety of employees by instilling core safety values and exhibiting continuous improvement in safety programs and worker incident reduction, the association says.

“The COSE Occupational Award recipients have exhibited a responsible behavior on worker, facility and environmental levels to create and maintain a positive safety culture,” ISRI Safety Transportation Director Commodor Hall says. "ISRI salutes the COSE Occupational award recipients that exemplify how the safest companies and facilities are also the most productive and ultimately the most successful.”

SA Recycling, Alter Trading and Pratt Recycling won the Best-in-Class, Small Class (22,000 to 100,000 hours or 11 to 50 employees), Award, which recognizes companies or facilities with the lowest Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) in 2018.

The Best-in-Class Award, Intermediate Class (102,000 to 200,000 hours or 51 to 100 employees), honorees were:

• Southern Metals Recycling Inc., Savannah;
• United Scrap Metal, Philadelphia; and
• United Scrap Metal, Richmond, Virginia.

Companies recognized in the Best-in-Class Award, Medium Class (202,000 to 500,000 hours or 101 to 250 employees), category were:

• Western Metals Recycling, Sandy, Utah;
• Sierra Recycling and Demolition, Bakersfield, California; and
• Advantage Metals Recycling, Kansas City, Missouri.

The Best-in-Class Award, Large Class (greater than 502,000 hours or more than 251 employees), honorees were:

• United Scrap Metal, Cicero, Illinois; and
• Audubon Metals, Henderson, Kentucky.

The Rising Star Award was granted to COSE member companies or facilities that achieved an OSHA TRIR of 2.94 or less in 2018. SA Recycling; Pratt Recycling; Texas Port Recycling, Houston; and Metal Recycling Services, Monroe, North Carolina, were among the winners.

The Superior Achievement Award also was granted to the COSE member companies or facilities that achieved an OSHA TRIR of 0.75 or less in 2018. 2018. SA Recycling; Alter Trading; Schupan Industrial Recycling, Elkhart, Indiana; Southern Metals Recycling, Savannah; and United Scrap Metal were among the winners.
