Holmes brings an extensive background in the plastics recycling industry to the association.
The Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI), Washington, which represents around 1,000 plastics manufacturing companies, has added Kim Holmes to lead the association’s recycling initiatives. She starts with SPI on March 1, 2013.
In October 2012, members of SPI’s Material Suppliers Council, Processor Council and Brand Owners Council met to discuss the launch of a recycling/recovery initiative. A working group was formed and two resources are currently being developed: A Post-Commercial Materials Recovery Survey that will annually provide industry-wide statistics and a Benchmarking Tool for the Plastics Industry that will serve as a self-assessment resource for companies to compare their operations to best practices.
As director of recycling, Holmes will be tasked with developing SPI’s new recovery/recycling program and manage the organization’s effort to drive the industry toward achieving full recovery and re-use of post-industrial plastics. She will manage SPI’s Recycling Committee and be responsible for overall management of issues related to recycling. Holmes also will conduct outreach regarding plastics recycling and waste diversion to governmental bodies, NGOs and stakeholder coalitions.

Holmes is currently principal consultant at Oregon-based 4R Sustainability. Prior to working at 4R Sustainability, Holmes served as advanced marketing manager for post-consumer recycled products at a U.S.-based unit of Saudi Arabia-based petro-chemical company SABIC. She was responsible for developing and marketing SABIC’s post-consumer recycled plastics portfolio in the Americas.
